Set Decoration is Key to Successful Video Production

Want to create a video production to promote your product? You can’t just point and shoot a great video. Thoughtful planning and outstanding execution is not only the ticket to award winning videos, but also the ticket to increased product sales. Minor details can make or break a production. Let’s look at set decorating, for instance.

Set dec is all about dressing the filmed location to be aesthetically pleasing on camera and to the audience. Ideally, set dec enhances the product’s visual appeal, and helps sell a mood, lifestyle or “story” along with it. Because the ultimate purpose of a product video is to communicate the product’s appeal, functionality and how well it can be incorporated into your own lifestyle, you’ll want to consider how colours and patterns pull focus to or away from your product. Calling too much attention to the set defeats the purpose of the video!

Set dec for video production requires taking everything into account: camera shots and angles, lighting, blocking, the actors and their costumes and props. Creating an environment that enhances the product’s appeal is the name of the game. Setting and capturing the mood will entice viewers to buy your product.

For example, when PPG was recently hired to shoot a promotional video for Vancouver-based FMI Brands’ portable fire bowl, we dressed the set (a patio and pool area) to make it as appealing to viewers as possible. Our goal: show how well the fire bowl can be incorporated into an outdoor setting, show how it enhances the mood and lighting of a home, and ultimately, get consumers to picture how the product will look in their own outdoor space — so they’ll go out and buy one. PPG photographed the bare set prior to filming and brought in items to create an ambiance to attract the right type of consumer to the product. Furnishings, accent items, plants, candles, fabrics and food items were used to draw in potential customers, and sell them a story: how the product enhances relaxation, pleasure, conversation and aesthetics. The video ultimately says, “Can’t you see yourself curled up beside a fire, sipping a glass of wine, enjoying the sunset and great conversation every night?”

Of course, thoughtful planning and outstanding execution isn’t just limited to set dec: the way we lit the set evocatively, used subtle camera motion to convey elegance and filled the frame with foreground and background items that conveyed situation, all worked in tandem to accomplish the video’s communication objective.
