Award-Winning Video Production Company Gives a Caveat About Awards
Ok, so we're a bit happy: we've won another Aegis Award (our 5th) for our production of Odenza Marketing's corporate video.
Big deal? Sure. But there are more important things to consider when looking at a prospective video production company other than their award hardware.
Here are a few caveats about video production awards:
- Eye Candy Wins Big: For whatever reason, eye candy seems to be the biggest influencer of award juries. Although the Aegis, Communicator, and DV Awards are all juried by industry peers, its a component of human nature to be initially wowed by the visual elements that are specialized: motion graphics, 3D, animation, aerial photography, and visual f/x tend to score big. If those elements don't necessarily impress you, you may not see a winning production as being that worthy.
- Client Satisfaction Award? The ultimate decision as to a video's approval or award-worthiness should be the client who commissioned it.Did the video meet all of the client's expectations, communicate their message clearly, and did the production company handle the task professionally? On budget? On time? Creative input and suggestions? Those are the kinds of real criteria that should not be overlooked. Ironically, its possible to have a video that looks great -- but that the client isn't happy with. Maybe it doesn't satisfy their objectives, or handling the production company was more of a chore than it was worth.
- Consistency: What can you infer from a production company that has won an award for their work for their clients? That they're capable of producing a product that can be recognized by their peers/industry. That's no guarantee that the same level of workmanship and care will happen for your company's video. That's why awards for fictitious or humourous video and film competitions are great, but those are labours of love by an individual or small group. How about videos that are born out of business need?
So, what can you look at when prospecting for suitable video production companies?
In our case, take a look at our client testimonials and testimonial videos -- and specifically look for he kind of criteria that our past clients were looking for, and if we met their expectations regarding them. Then, take a look at our client list and our portfolio -- each portfolio item has a description of the project, so you can figure out what the client's objectives were, and how the video accomplishes that.
